Woodworking Only Making Shop Tools
I was recently reading an article on a popular woodworking website about how to make a shop-made crosscut sled. I was surprised to see that the author didn’t mention using a miter gauge to guide the workpiece. Instead, he recommended using a stop block clamped to the sled’s fence to position the workpiece.
I have to say that I was a little taken aback. I’ve been woodworking for over 30 years, and I’ve never seen a stop block used in this way. In fact, I’ve never even seen a shop-made crosscut sled that didn’t use a miter gauge to guide the workpiece.
I have to wonder why the author would recommend using a stop block in this way. I can think of only one reason: to avoid having to adjust the miter gauge when changing the width of the cut. But this is a really bad idea. It’s much easier to adjust the miter gauge than it is to adjust the stop block.
In fact, I’d go so far as to say that using a stop block in this way is a bad habit. I’ve seen a lot of woodworkers do this, and it always leads to trouble. The workpiece is never perfectly aligned with the blade, so the cut is never accurate. And it’s very difficult to adjust the stop block so that it’s perfectly aligned with the blade.
So why not use a miter gauge to guide the workpiece? It’s simple and accurate, and it’s very easy to adjust. There’s no need to use a stop block.
