Fine Woodworking Plans Cremation Urn Plans
Woodworkers are often asked to build cremation urns. There are many ways to go about it, but I find the simplest is to use a plywood box with a hinged lid.
The basic dimensions of the urn are 9″ x 9″ x 6″, but you can adjust them to fit the size of the deceased. The lid is attached with a piano hinge, so it can be easily opened and closed.
The inside of the urn is lined with a felt or other soft fabric. You can either cut a piece to fit or use a remnant. The urn can then be filled with the cremains, a lock of hair, or any other memento.
The urn can be finished with a number of different finishes, such as lacquer, wax, or polyurethane. I’ve included a few photos of a urn I made using a cherry finish.
