Woodworking Tool Chest
There are a few reasons why you might want to build a woodworking tool chest. The most common reason is to have a place to store your tools. But another reason to build a tool chest is to have a project to work on. Building something with your own hands is a great way to learn new skills and to become more proficient with the tools you already own.
The tool chest I’m going to show you how to build is based on the one I built for my own shop. It’s not a complicated project, but it is a bit involved. So, if you’re a beginner, I would recommend that you build a smaller tool chest first. Once you have some experience under your belt, you can then build a tool chest like this one.
The first step is to build the base of the tool chest. This is a simple box made from 3/4″ plywood. The dimensions of the base are 24″ wide by 18″ deep. The sides of the base are rabbeted to fit the bottom and top pieces, and the front and back are hinged to the sides.
The next step is to build the top of the tool chest. This is also made from 3/4″ plywood. The dimensions are the same as the base, 24″ wide by 18″ deep. The top is also rabbeted to fit the sides and front and back pieces.
The next step is to build the sides of the tool chest. These are also made from 3/4″ plywood. The dimensions are 24″ high by 9″ wide. The sides are not rabbeted, but they do have a dado cut in the back to fit the back piece.
The next step is to build the front and back of the tool chest. These are made from 1/2″ plywood. The dimensions are 18″ high by 9″ wide. The front and back are rabbeted to fit the sides and top.
The next step is to build the bottom of the tool chest. This is made from 1/2″ plywood. The dimensions are 18″ wide by 18″ deep. The bottom is rabbeted to fit the base and top pieces.
The next step is to build the lid of the tool chest. This is made from 1/2″ plywood. The dimensions are 18″ wide by 24″ deep. The lid is not rabbeted, but it does have a dado cut in the front and back to fit the front and back pieces.
The next step is to build the front and back rails. These are made from 1×3 lumber. The dimensions are 18″ high by 3″ wide.
The next step is to attach the front and back rails to the sides of the tool chest. The rails are attached with glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.
The next step is to attach the bottom of the tool chest to the base. The bottom is attached with glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.
The next step is to attach the lid of the tool chest to the top. The lid is attached with glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.
The final step is to attach the front and back of the tool chest to the lid. The front and back are attached with glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.
The finished tool chest should look something like this.
