In the Netherlands, a tool chest is more than just a place to store your tools. It’s a piece of furniture that is often passed down from generation to generation. Many Dutch tool chests are finely crafted and can be quite expensive.
Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to build my own Dutch tool chest. I was able to find a plan for a chest that was based on an original chest that is currently in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
The plan called for the use of a variety of different woodworking techniques, including dovetailing, mortise and tenon joinery, and inlay. I was able to make a few modifications to the plan to make it a bit easier for someone who was new to woodworking.
The end result is a beautiful chest that I’m sure will be passed down to my children one day. If you’d like to build your own Dutch tool chest, I’ve put together a detailed plan that you can download for free.
