We have been crafting fine, hardwood furniture since the late 1800s and continue our tradition today in our workshop located in the small town of Charingworth, England. The History of Kovecses Woodworking
Kovecses Woodworking began in 1947, with the founding of a small wood shop in Hungary by master craftsman and carpenter, Antal Kovecses. He had apprenticed under some renowned local cabinetmakers, who taught him the traditional European techniques and styles. His goal was to furnish customers with unique and finely crafted furniture that reflected old-world design elements. As word spread, demand for his work increased and he soon expanded his woodshop to accommodate larger projects.
Antal’s sons joined their father in the business and eventually took over the operations when Antal retired in the early 1970s. The workshop typically employed two or three people at any given time, many of whom were family members; some first cousins also worked there on a part-time basis during school holidays or summer breaks.
The family focused their attention towards making quality reproductions of period pieces from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, that included Arts and Crafts bookcases, chairs, desks, benches and armoires. In addition to antique reproductions, they designed custom pieces for clients throughout Hungary and even abroad. Some special orders meant sourcing exotic woods from Austria, Italy or Germany depending on what was needed. Utilizing modern woodworking techniques while preserving old world craftsmanship proved to be very successful for Kovecses Woodworking throughout its history—from its humble beginnings right up until today as a thriving artisanal workshop located just outside Budapest.
