Glossary Of Terms
Biscuit Joinery: A type of wood joinery that uses a biscuit cutter to insert small wooden oval-shaped biscuits into the surface of two pieces of wood. The biscuit is then glued into place, which allows for a strong and permanent bond between the two pieces.
Crosscut Saw: A saw used to make crosscuts in wood”that is, cuts made perpendicular to the grain direction. Crosscut saws typically have larger teeth than rip saws and are better suited for trimming and crosscutting purposes.
Dovetail Joint: One of the strongest joints to use in woodworking. It’s an interlocking joint between two pieces of wood, created by cutting angled tails in one piece and angled pins in the other. When cut correctly and joined together, a dovetail joint will be very strong and attractive.
Edge Jointing: A process that uses a specialized tool known as an edge jointer to create perfectly flush joints on both sides of two pieces of wood aligned end-to-end. Edge jointing is often done with boards before they are cut into smaller parts or assembled into larger panels.
Rip Cut: A long, continuous cut made parallel to a board’s grain direction (rather than across it). Rip cuts can be accomplished with a tablesaw, handsaw, jigsaw, or circular saw; depending on the thickness and size of the material being cut.
Table Saw: A powered machine used for making accurate straight cuts through larger boards or panels more quickly than could be achieved by hand tools alone. Table saws feature a fence and miter gauge combination for guiding stock as it passes through the blade.
