Interview with Ben, the owner of the local woodworking business

Q: What inspired you to start woodworking in North Carolina?
A: Growing up in rural North Carolina, I was exposed to a lot of old-fashioned ways of working with wood. It seemed like a noble and fulfilling craft, so I set up my own shop. Now, I have the chance to create beautiful pieces from the materials that come from this great state.

Q: What makes North Carolina unique for woodworking?
A: The climate here is special for working with woods. It gives us access to hardwoods such as walnut and cherry, which are usually difficult to find. At our workshop, we can receive these woods directly from local wood suppliers, ensuring we get only sustainably sourced timbers. Plus, there’s an incredibly rich history of furniture making in this region that’s driven by traditions going back centuries ” it’s an inspiring environment to work in!

Explore contemporary trends

New tools such as powered planers and routers, new machinery such as 3D printers, computer numerical control (CNC) routers and lathes, as well as laser-cutters are all popular in North Carolina woodworking. The use of hardwoods for furniture is becoming increasingly popular due to its strength and aesthetic appeal. Additionally, the use of reclaimed wooden materials is gaining importance among carpenters and do-it-yourselfers looking to reduce their environmental impact by using existing products rather than new materials. New techniques are being utilized to create more efficient solutions such as pocket screw joinery and miter saw accuracy which make tight joint construction easier. Automation is also increasing in NC woodworking with robotic arms performing precision tasks like sanding, finishing, cutting, moldings and routing which allows craftsmen a more varied range of workspaces. Finally techniques such as steam bending have been employed to help produce unique organic shapes that could not be done before with traditional methods.

Investigate safety

When it comes to woodworking in North Carolina, safety must be taken into account due to the weather and climate. Woodworkers must factor in high temperatures, humidity, and other environmental factors when working with power tools and machinery. Working with wood outdoors can also be hazardous depending on the temperature of the material being used; some materials become brittle or unstable when exposed to extreme heat or cold. Additionally, windy conditions can cause airborne debris that can clog up machinery. It is important for woodworkers in North Carolina to ensure they are adequately dressed for outdoor work and have the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, hearing protection, dust masks and gloves. Along with these safety considerations, woodworkers need to take certain precautions during stormy weather by safely sheltering their equipment if possible or removing it from outside completely if necessary. Taking these steps will help ensure woodworkers in North Carolina stay safe while working on their projects.
