Phil Lowe Woodworking Obituary
Phil Lowe, a master woodworker and teacher, died on October 10, 2018, at the age of 78. Lowe was born in 1940 in Yorkshire, England, and learned the craft of woodworking from his father. He came to the United States in 1965 and opened Phil Lowe Woodworking in Arlington, Massachusetts, in 1972. For more than 45 years, Lowe taught woodworking to students of all ages, sharing his passion for the craft and imparting his skill and knowledge.
Lowe’s work was characterized by its simplicity and elegance. He was a master of form and proportion, and his pieces were often inspired by the natural world. His bowls, boxes, and other objects were finely crafted and beautifully finished, and his use of wood grain and color created stunning effects.
Lowe’s work was exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and was included in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian Institution, among others. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Boston Craft Guild’s Gold Medal and the New England Woodworkers’ Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Lowe is survived by his wife, Linda, and his children, Christopher and Katherine. A memorial service will be held on November 10, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at the Arlington Street Church in Boston.
